WiSe 16/17: Introduction to linguistics (Wed 10-12 Ivanova)
This class provides a first introduction to working methods in linguistics. It is therefore the mandatory basis for all students who have to fulfil requirements in linguistics. The course addresses the main subareas of inguistics such as phonetics and phonology (the study of sounds), morphology (the study of word structure), syntax (the study of the structure of sentences), semantics (the study of meaning) and pragmatics (the study of meaning in context). Further subareas such as the history of English, sociolinguistics (the study of the interrelation of language and society), psycholinguistics (the study of the interrelation of language and cognition), historical linguistics and others shall be addressed according to the lecturer's preferences.
